Eli Kersh started a consulting firm, e-limnology, in 2016 and used it to provide services for customers as a side business where his current employer had gaps. He primarily provided mapping for customers and his business took off. Eventually he found a niche and e-limnology transformed into its current form Lake Tech. Lake Tech is on the forefront of new products and technologies for lake management. He is always trying to have a practical approach to lake management and rely heavily on new technologies that demonstrate value and ultimately simplifies lake management to make it more accessible to the public.When asked why Lake Tech chose BioBase Eli said “BioBase is the right tool for the right job 99% of the time. People think the more sophisticated and expensive your hydrographic equipment is the better your resulting map will be. While it can be true in some settings like very deep areas or large marine settings, what makes a good map isn’t the equipment it’s the hydrographer.” He found that BioBase and the Lowrance equipment provided him with the suitable tools that was easy to use, produced very accurate results, and most importantly, allowed him to be more cost effective and provide quick service for his clients. He can produce annual maps for five years or more for the same price an engineering firm might be able to generate one map using multi beam technology. “For lake morphology, sediment characteristics and vegetation there is not a better, faster or more affordable solution on the market.”

LakeTech has an extremely positive impact in the arid west currently where water shortages are a big issue and unfortunately common. LakeTech is especially effective in lakes and ponds used for irrigation. Being able to accurately understand what you currently have is really the first step to managing it. LakeTech also uses BioBase combined with remote sensors and monitoring to get an idea of seepage vs evaporation and water loss to make recommendations on pond sealing or lining. With the cost effectiveness and ease of use of BioBase, Eli can map a lake two or three times and this comes in handy when dealing with the lake morphology changes that occur after big rain events the Western part of the United States experiences. LakeTech values how quickly BioBase can accurately map in practically real time between Genesis Live and the few hours it takes to process the data on the platform he is able to begin phase two and sometimes three of his projects on the same day, from planning out aeration designs to where to drop remote sensors for the most accurate results. He also stated “BioBase makes it really easy to export the data to create customized deliverables utilizing traditional GIS software.”
Eli spoke with us about what might be a hinderance for adopting BioBase for his colleagues and had this to share. “The biggest misconception is that it’s harder to do than it really is, that it costs more than it does, and takes a lot more time to do. There is also a significant segment of LakeTech’s industry that believes you must have more sophisticated equipment to generate a meaningful map.”

When asked to elaborate he said “companies are not my competition, plants and algae are. Lake Management companies are all trying to do the same thing, battle against and repair degraded habitats. I believe so strongly in the core value of education that I will take a vacation day to bring a portable unit to a colleague jobsite to make a map for free to demonstrate how valuable BioBase is.”
